Hayley Lodge, Midwife, Ward 25 – L&D

We are delighted to announce the winners of June’s DAISY Awards – an international recognition programme that honours and celebrates the exceptional care that many nurses and midwives provide every day. At the Luton & Dunstable hospital, midwife Hayley Lodge received a DAISY Award nomination “for acting quickly and decisively.”

The father of her patient said: “my 5-year-old son was admitted to Ward 25 with a fever (prior diagnosis T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia).

“On the Tuesday morning I noticed a few spots on his arm. The attending nurse and I suspected chicken pox. I realised that he needed to start on medications ASAP so the nurse called the doctor. The doctor decided we wait until the next day to see how the spots developed. I immediately reached our CNS at Addenbrookes Hospital who was able to reach Hayley, who was off duty at the time. Within 10 minutes Hayley came running into our room, diagnosed likely chicken pox and got my started quickly on Acyclovir.

“Without Hayley’s decisive action it’s likely that my son would have deteriorated quickly.
Thanks to Hayley for being a superstar.”
