Apprenticeships

About our Apprenticeships

Bedfordshire Hospitals are very proud of our comprehensive apprenticeships offer. Throughout the year we offer a variety of apprenticeship opportunities, to support NHS workforce plans and recruitment priorities. All our opportunities are advertised on our web pages and on NHS Jobs.

Apprenticeships are available to new recruits – where a job role has been identified as an apprenticeship, as well as to existing staff – who meet eligibility rules. Whether you join us as an apprentice or wish to be developed later in your journey with us, apprenticeships can support your career aspirations.

Apprenticeships pathways are available to support most of our job roles, and individual apprenticeships are available from entry level 2, right up to Masters Level 7. Our apprenticeships support young people in their first steps into the world of work but can support learners at all ages.

From Painter/Decorator to People Professional, Nurse to Biomedical Scientist, we hope you will be inspired to consider our apprenticeships.

A collage of a range of staff who also work as apprentices

This year’s theme was ‘Skills for Life’ which reflects the continued importance of apprenticeships in giving both new recruits and our existing staff the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to excel in their role. Development through apprenticeships helps us meet our Trust Vision and Values, and provide the best possible care for our patients.

We have worked hard to raise the profile of Trust apprenticeships in schools and colleges, libraries and shopping centres, and around both hospital sites. You may also have seen our social media posts and our advert on billboards across Bedford.

It has been a delight to meet with current apprentices, apprentice completers, and those interested in the potential of developing further. Throughout the week we have enjoyed some great career conversations, supported people’s aspirations, and helped plan which apprenticeships pathways might serve best.

David Carter, CEO:

“During National Apprenticeships Week it has been great to see our team spreading the word about the diverse range of roles and the immense benefits they can have for those starting out their careers, as well as anyone looking to develop new skills.

“We’re very proud to have a strong apprenticeships programme spearheaded by our cross site apprenticeships team. As of 1 February 2025 we have a total of 276 apprentices enrolled across our hospital sites and I am looking forward to seeing their progress and how their positive contributions help to improve the patient experience.”
