The Therapy Department at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital prides itself on having a highly motivated, enthusiastic and innovative team. Whilst it is a very busy hospital, the team are dynamic and supportive, encouraging outstanding care and opportunities to develop professionally.

The development of a ‘Therapy Hub’ has centralised therapy services at L&D. Services include: Speech and Language Therapy, Outpatient clinics and inpatient assessment facilities e.g. therapy gym and assessment kitchen.

Band 5 Rotational Posts currently run for 6 months for OT’s and Physio’s all other roles are static in a specialist team.

Band 5 Physiotherapy rotations offered:

  • Medical respiratory including ITU and HDU
  • Acute Paediatrics
  • MSK outpatients
  • Medicine including EAU and MSS
  • Orthopaedics and Surgery
  • Neurology
  • Complex Medicine
  • Additionally there is involvement in the Emergency Respiratory On –call Service for adults and children

Band 5 Occupational Therapy rotations offered:

  • Acute Medicine
  • Orthopaedics and Surgery
  • Complex Medicine
  • Neurology

There are also opportunities to gain experience in additional specialisms, but these are not full rotations. This includes:

  • Cardiac Rehab
  • Pulmonary Rehab
  • Hand Therapy
  • Limb

Support structure: There is established support for rotational staff within the department. This includes:

  • Regular departmental meetings, in-service training sessions and clinical governance meetings.
  • Regular supervision and appraisals.
  • Newly qualified staff participate in the Preceptorship programme, where specialist objectives and goals are set and regularly evaluated.
  • Specialist interest groups.
  • Peer support via Band 5 meetings for both OTs and Physio’s.
  • Additionally, the hospital management team run reflective events twice a year, ensuring staff are informed about the hospital’s development and plans.
  • Luton and Dunstable University Hospital offers expert, excellent care to a large diverse patient population. The Hospital is situated close to Luton airport and has excellent links to London.
