The gastroenterology and hepatology department deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver and pancreas. The most common conditions we deal with are inflammatory bowel disease, cancers, alcoholic liver disease, chronic viral hepatitis and functional bowel disease. We also deliver the colon cancer screening program.
The majority of our patients are outpatients and day cases and are seen first when they come for an endoscopy. When given an appointment, patients will receive a written explanation explaining what to expect when they come in, patients will also have a detailed discussion with a nurse prior to any procedure in the endoscopy unit.
Gastroenterology is the medical specialty dealing with diseases of the digestive system.
Our specialist Consultants diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the stomach, duodenum and small and large bowel (colon). The team also includes two Consultant Hepatologists, who specialise in diseases of the liver.
The L&D Gastroenterology team work closely with colleagues in General Surgery in order to provide seamless care for patients with gastrointestinal cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). We also have close links with Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for patients requiring tertiary care for liver disease.
The Gastroenterology team work closely with the Nutrition and Dietetics department.
