Riverbank Ward Practice Educator – Bedford Hospital – Educator Award

Sara was nominated for the Educator Award by her colleagues, who have found her to be invaluable to students, and subsequently to our younger patients:

“Sara joined us in the summer of 2023 in a newly created role within Paediatrics to support students across both Paediatrics and Neonates. From the outset, she brought a positive “can-do” attitude, which has had a transformative impact on the student experience. We’ve seen a significant improvement in student satisfaction surveys, and many now express a desire to return and work on Riverbank post-qualification a clear reflection of the support they receive during placements.

“Sara combines warmth and compassion with high expectations, offering students the perfect blend of care, professionalism, and motivation. She has gone above and beyond in their role, recently expanding their responsibilities to support preceptorship staff alongside the Practice Development Nurse. Sara’s efforts have created a seamless transition from student to qualified nurse, offering consistency and reassurance during what can be an overwhelming time.

“Sara brings a sunny personality to the unit every day, lifting spirits, welcoming families, and consistently modelling excellence in care.

“Since stepping into the role of Practice Education Facilitator on Riverbank Ward, Sara has completely transformed the learning environment for student nurses and newly qualified staff.

“When I first started on the ward, feedback from students indicated that placements on Riverbank were often met with anxiety. That narrative has now completely changed. Students actively look forward to their time here, and as they near qualification, many now express a desire to work on the ward long-term.

“Sara spends considerable time ensuring students feel heard, supported, and respected. Concerns are addressed swiftly and effectively. they’ve implemented a structured first-year program for newly qualified nurses, helping them develop skills and confidence within a supportive framework.

“Her impact extends beyond those who thrive they also provide critical support to students who are struggling. Staff are guided on how to develop action plans to help those students succeed, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to become a safe, competent practitioner.

“In summary, the educational experience offered in Paediatrics has improved significantly due to Sara’s tireless efforts, compassion, and vision. She has become an essential part of the team, and the progress made since her arrival is a testament to their dedication and leadership.
