The Diabetes Team at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D) recently won the prestigious Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award 2023.
They received the award for ‘best innovation to improve patient safety when discharging patients from hospital’.
The inpatient diabetes team worked closely with the Trust’s IT teams to develop new diabetes features on Nervecentre with the intention of optimising inpatient diabetes care from the point of admission to discharge and follow up.
This innovation has created a safer and more efficient pathway for following up on diabetes patients upon discharge. The electronic system reduces the laborious manual effort and instead allows for efficient notification of a patients discharge.
This initiative allows for patients to be followed up in a timely manner, which enhances patient safety and reduces the risk of patient follow ups being missed.
Dr Shiu-Ching Soo, Clinical Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology at the L&D, said: “The design of this initiative is simple and cost-effective, but the impact on the patients’ diabetes management and safety is prominent.
“The team is grateful to be named as the winner of the Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award and we hope that this will serve as a platform to allow greater exposure of this project to other healthcare members.”
The team collected the award at the ABCD Conference at The Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh on 5 September.
