The Pulmonary Rehabilitation service at Bedford Hospital has become one of only 25 in the country to be accredited by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services Accreditation Scheme (PRSAS).

Pulmonary Rehabilitation (PR) is a six-week exercise and education programme designed for people with lung conditions to help them to improve the management of their condition and quality of life.

The accreditation scheme, run by the Royal College of Physicians, aims to improve the quality and outcomes of PR in the UK.

The Bedford team were congratulated on their approach to staff health and wellbeing, engagement and communication with referrers, involvement of patients in service development, assessment of health inequalities, patient feedback and excellent patient support once PR has finished.

Hannah Shore, Therapies Service Manager for Paediatrics and Community Physiotherapy at Bedford Hospital, said: “We are a small team that are passionate about the service we provide; encouraging and supporting respiratory patients to be as active as possible, manage their symptoms and reduce hospital admissions. We are delighted to receive this accreditation following all the effort and hard work put in by the whole team.”

Mr Paul Tisi, Medical Director at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, added: “This is an excellent achievement for the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service at Bedford Hospital and I’m so proud of the work that’s gone into achieving this.

“This accreditation reiterates our commitment to providing high quality care to our patients with lung conditions, helping them to improve their health and quality of life.”
