Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Equality is about creating a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Diversity is about recognising and valuing difference in its broadest sense. Inclusion is about an individual’s experience within the workplace and in wider society and the extent to which they feel valued and included.
At Bedfordshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we are passionate about building a working environment and culture that is ‘Inclusive by Instinct’, where Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a golden thread that is woven into the wider organisational strategy and becomes business as usual. We want our employees to feel a sense of belonging, psychologically safe, where their views and opinions are listened to and acted upon. We actively encourage you to bring your whole self to work – be proud of being you! We want to work with everyone without judgement, recognising individuality as a strength, no matter who you are or where you are from.

We have a Staff Diversity Network (SDN) which any member of staff is free to join. The SDN is instrumental in creating an inclusive culture and promoting positive change across Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Staff with protected characteristics and allies can feel supported, valued, respected, and listened to.
The SDN has intersectionality at its core. A key part of the SDN’s function is to develop positive work experiences for current and future staff by embedding equality of opportunity in everyday practices, such as, recruitment, career progression and promotion to provide a fair, equitable, supportive, and encouraging working and learning environment for our staff.
The SDN work is underpinned by legislation, the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty
‘Intersectionality is the interconnected nature of social categorisations, such as race, class and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating an overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage’ View this short video on intersectionality and health explained.
How can you get involved?
The SDN meetings are open to all Trust staff, there is no requirement to ‘join’ the SDN; all Trust staff are members. Meetings are held monthly on MS Teams
The SDN is supported by the SDN Steering Group and meetings are co-chaired by the Heads of Health Inequalities and Inclusion. The Steering Group membership is made up of Single Points of Contact (SPOCs) who volunteer as ambassadors for the network, providing a named, safe point of contact for staff who seek support from an EDI perspective. The Steering Group has regular contact with senior members of the executive team, providing a two-way reporting system for feedback, ensuring that we create a positive and inclusive working environment.
The Staff Diversity Network currently has the following SPOCS
- Parents and Carers
