I retired from a Consultant Anaesthetist post at Luton & Dunstable Hospital in 2015 for twenty years. I led medical audit of deaths and harms placing concerns before the leadership team. Latterly I was one of the medical examiners in the bereavement office.

As the trust changes from papers records to digital format I identified processes that failed in timely, accurate communication.

In the Bedfordshire Hospital Trust merger, there may be vulnerabilities in communication with patients accessing health data entry sites.

I will bring enthusiasm, commitment and hard work to the role of Governor to help achieve a positive future.

From an early career in hospital pathology to working in schools as a science technician, to lecturing in health & social care, assessing and quality assuring NVQs in Care, becoming a First Aid trainer and examiner, and now volunteering as a ‘good neighbour’ and Secretary of the voluntary organisation Houghton Regis Helpers, I have gained wide experience in hospital services, residential and domiciliary care. I believe effective communication and consultation between management, staff, patients, their families and carers is key to the successful future of the Trust. As a Public Governor for Bedfordshire I would seek to support, value and respect all parties inclusively, in particular external partners and stakeholders.

I am reliable and hard-working, have good organisational skills and have been told I am a good listener. I have experience in advocating with both health and social care services on behalf of vulnerable adults and continue to work freelance as a self-employed tutor and assessor. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and recently became a Dementia Friend. I keep up to date with Safeguarding training, understand the importance of Data Protection and confidentiality and have enhanced DBS clearance. I have great admiration for all hospital and medical staff for their care and dedication and I believe I will bring patience and compassion to the role.

I am a volunteer advocate and I work in the Bedfordshire community, supporting people who find it hard to put their views across and feel they are not being listened to. Within this role I work with vulnerable people who could be at risk. I work with the community health teams and ELFT
the Mental Health teams and ensure their patients are provided with the best possible services. I am also a debt counsellor and help people with their financial problems. I am a director of Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire which enables me to understand both sides of situations concerning the
patient. I am the mental health champion and I attend stakeholder meetings to represent the service user’s view point. I have also had previous experience working with the NHS for a large pharmaceutical company specialising in Women’s health.

Thank you for electing me a Governor of L&D in 2015 Good healthcare is a human and democratic right. Our NHS is under threat. We must all help to save it and ensure high standards: efficient, caring, equal and accessible care for everyone from birth to death. If re-elected, I will continue to:

  • Work with governors, staff and the public to support and Improve performance at the L&D; oppose further privatisation; closure of wards; transfer of essential services to other hospitals and campaign for more funding for health and community care
  • Listen to and consult with the public and inform the Trust of your concerns
  • Protect and expand local services to meet needs and expectations
  • Speak out, ask questions, constructively challenge and hold Directors to account
  • Work to reduce health inequality and improve access to healthcare for all, regardless of age, disability, class, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or culture.

I have been a Trust patient, governor, volunteer and non executive director for many years and have much experience and commitment in ensuring high standards at L&D.

Married: 2 children, 4 grandchildren, love gardening and written 14 books, 2 on Mental Health/Disabilities.
As a College/University Lecturer and community champion I will use my skills, knowledge and experience; including: understanding of employment law; strategic management practice and change; human resources; advocacy; chairing meetings; managing budgets and holding senior management/directors to account.
