At the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital there is a Patient flow / Bed management service to assist you when patients need to be admitted.
The patient flow team are responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of patients through the hospital from ED within 4 hours through EAU and then to an appropriate ward.
Our aim is to get the right patient to the right bed to ensure patients safety and enhance their experience.
When the hospital is under pressure for bed capacity the patient flow team will need to work closely with you to identify patients that can be outlied to non acute wards. The hospital uses a live electronic bed management system called extra med and the patient flow team can support you in using and accessing this system.

When patient flow are not on duty the senior nurse for the hospital (bleep 555) will assist you with the location of beds for your patients.

Career and Counselling Advice
All junior medical and dental staff doctor have a designated Educational Supervisor who meets with the trainee to discuss Personal Development plans and aims to identify study leave requirements and later to review progress made.
In addition, there is general career and counselling advice available for all junior medical and dental staff. Many junior staff find it helpful to talk about their long-term career plans and formulate ideas or there may be a specific problem or difficulty that has arisen.

Chaplaincy exists to provide opportunities for pastoral, spiritual and religious care of all staff, patients and their relatives within the Trust. We are committed to people regardless of race, religion, creed, gender, culture or sexual orientation. Spiritual healthcare is important in caring for the whole person.
The centre provides for both postgraduate and undergraduate medical education and is a very active education and training centre within the Hospital. The College / Specialty Tutors and GP Tutors provide a comprehensive programme of general educational and specialty meetings for all Hospital doctors and General Practitioners. The hospital has recently been awarded full teaching status in recognition of its excellent undergraduate standards.

The Medical Education Office is located on the ground floor in COMET next to the main Lecture Hall. The Medical Education Manager and the Foundation Programme Administrator’s office is located on the 2nd floor of COMET. The Library is located on the 1st floor. Seminar Rooms, Multiskills Laboratory & Resuscitation Training Room are located on the 2nd floor.

Study Leave guidelines are available. If you need advice regarding study leave, associated travel and expenses, career and counselling guidance, supplies of pens and films for overhead projection, PowerPoint information for presentations or anything else – please visit or phone the Medical Education office. If we can’t help you ourselves we ‘know someone who can’ – we can at least point you in the right direction.
IT supports staff in providing patient care, for example requesting and viewing tests, creating discharge letters, recording patient activity etc.
The Trust has approximately 4200 employees with access to 1800 computers and 800 printers across the site. All staff at the Trust are provided with email and internet access.
There are more than 180 IT systems in place providing administrative and clinical support. Some of these systems are large and are used by nearly every department in the Trust. Others are smaller and provide dedicated services to single departments.
The IT Department provides support for most of these systems and training for many of the major clinical systems in the Trust.

Pool/snooker tables are located in the Doctors’ Mess & Social Club.

Various gymnasiums and health clubs are located within walking distance from the hospital towards Dunstable.
Leisure Centres are located in both Luton and Dunstable and include swimming pools, gyms, saunas etc.

All members of staff are eligible to join the Social Club. Membership entitles you to use the bar, participate in social events and to enter any of the sub-sections within the club. These include; Squash, Badminton and Darts. There are also a variety of interests groups.

There is always a 555 bleep holder on site. The bleep holders are senior nurses who take on the role in addition to their existing role. They work a three-shift pattern, starting the shifts at 07.15am, 14.30pm and 21.00pm; the handover period is 30 minutes. During their shifts there are a number of issues they may have to deal with. These include:
- Managing beds out of hours. This includes weekends and evenings when the bed manager is no longer on site.
- Attend some emergency calls.
- Respond to fire calls as the site fire officer.
- Provide nursing advice.
- Deal with press and police.
- Deal with bereaved relatives (by appointment only). This includes escorting relatives to the mortuary to view the deceased.
- Deal with calls from switchboard, which may be of any nature, as 555 bleep holder provides a central point of contact for the hospital.
- Report to the off-site general manager.
- Deal with complaints.
- Liaise with on call services.
- Co-ordinate site staffing.
- May help out with cannulation. At night may take bloods and cannulate by prior arrangement
- Access the emergency drug cupboard.
- Arrange escorts to other hospitals.
- When contacted the 555 bleep holder will always respond but it may take a while for them to do so. Please be bear in mind the reason will be that that they are involved in other issues and they will get back to you as soon as possible.
