3D and 4D Baby Scans in Bedfordshire
Mums-to-be usually have two scans on the NHS during a normal pregnancy, but with advances in technology, it’s now possible to see a little bit more of your baby before they’re born by opting to pay privately for a 4D scan in addition to these. It is now possible to see a moving 3 dimensional image of your baby’s face before they are born.
How does a 4D scan work?
A normal scan uses an ultrasound beam to produce a black and white flat grainy 2 dimensional image of your baby in the womb. A 4D scan uses computer software to produce a moving real time 3D image (adding the 4th dimension to the scan).
At what stage of pregnancy should I have a 4D scan?
A 4D scan will usually be performed when you’re between 28 weeks and 32 weeks pregnant. Earlier than 28 weeks and your baby won’t have developed enough to clearly see features, whilst any later than 32 weeks your baby may have shifted position ready for the big day and therefore it’ll be harder to see their face and features. At Bedford Hospital, we prefer to perform the 4D scan after your anomaly scan has been completed and the baby is developed enough to see the face more clearly.
What will a 4D scan show me?
One of the most exciting reasons for having a 4D baby scan is the level of detail it’ll show you of your baby, in real-time. Depending on the babies position you’ll be able to see their face including eyes, mouth and nose. You’ll also be able to watch them stretch, yawn and even wiggle their fingers. Children are welcome to attend the scan and start to meet the new baby before they are born.
The moving 3D images are approximately 5 minutes and will be stored and provided for you on a USB stick to take home. There will be several images stored and you will also receive three thermal black and white images of your baby.
What are the benefits of a 4D scan?
Scans are undertaken by our trained and experienced hospital team, giving parents-to-be a better image of their baby with the added magic of seeing their little one moving around in real-time in the womb. This is not a diagnostic scan and no measurements will be taken but we can confirm the sex of your baby, if you want us to.
Where do I have the scan and how much does it cost?
We have a winter offer of £89 (usual cost is £145) for 3 thermal prints and USB.
Payment in full is required at the time of booking. We accept debit or credit cards excluding American Express.
The appointments are around 45 minutes and available at the hospital on Monday evenings. During the appointment you may be asked to walk around, should your baby not be lying in a good position.
