Maternity update – successful implementation of medication prescribing by community midwives
We are pleased to announce the successful implementation of new prescribing arrangements for medications provided to non-inpatient pregnant women and birthing people receiving antenatal care within Bedfordshire Hospitals.
These arrangements were introduced in two phases, with the first commencing at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in February 2025, followed by its introduction at Bedford Hospital in March 2025.
This now means the following medications can be prescribed by community midwives during antenatal appointments:
- Ferrous Sulphate (for the treatment of anaemia)
- Folic Acid (to reduce the risk of neural tube defects)
- Aspirin (for individuals identified as high risk of pre-eclampsia)
- Clotrimazole pessary (for the treatment of thrush)
- Ferrous Fumarate (for the treatment of anaemia)
If you are currently receiving antenatal care within Bedfordshire Hospitals and have any questions regarding your prescriptions, please consult your community midwife during your next appointment.
