Outpatient Services – 28 March 2020

The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital Outpatient Department has restructured its operational functioning in response to the Covid-19 pandemic with the imperative to reduce infection risk in the interests of maintaining the safety of both patients and staff. Routine and urgent new and follow up appointments are largely being maintained across specialties, but are now being conducted virtually by conversion to telephone clinics. Video consultations are being rapidly developed and we expect these to be rolled out over the next several weeks.

The situation with regards outpatient appointments and acceptance of new referrals, other than 2ww, may change in response to the demands placed on medical staff over time, with clinicians deployed to meet increased inpatient demands across the Trust.  GPs are asked to consider whether patients need to be referred to the Trust. Advice and guidance and consultant connect are available for advice to GPs, although responses may be a little slower due to acute demand at this time.

With regards referrals for same day emergencies, we are asking GPs to consider the balance of risk in referring high risk patients who may be self-isolating, but if truly necessary, referrals should be directed via GP liaison.

Notification of any additional changes necessary in referrals to Outpatient Services will be communicated to you.

We appreciate your understanding and support at this challenging time.
