Dr David Liu qualified in Cardiff in 1982 before moving on to anaesthetics and intensive care training which took place mostly in Nottingham, Middlesbrough and Bedford. In addition, he worked for 18 months in cardiology and general medicine in Shrewsbury. Dr Liu then became an instructor and attending anaesthesiologist at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, USA in 1993/4, specialising in liver transplant, paediatric and trauma anaesthesia. After completing higher specialist training in Nottingham, he was then appointed as consultant anaesthetist there in 1995.

Experience

He joined Bedford Hospital in 1997 as a consultant anaesthetist with an interest in obstetric anaesthesia. Over the last 12 years, Dr Liu has been heavily involved in postgraduate education and development. He was a specialty tutor from 1998 to 2002, then a clinical tutor from 2003 to 2007, responsible for setting up the foundation training programme in 2006/7. Dr Liu was appointed an interim clinical director in May 2007 and became a clinical director in April 08. His interest at present is patient safety and divisional performance.
