Blood Cancer Treatment Unit

Every year hundreds of patients across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and North Buckinghamshire are diagnosed with blood cancers, such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Currently there are no facilities in this area to treat these people. Patients with blood cancers who are admitted for other health reasons are put into wards, where the specialist support they need is not readily available.

The Luton and Dunstable University hospital will be installing a new purpose built facility offering patients with blood cancers the treatment they deserve, closer to home. This facility will ensure both inpatients and day patients have access to a dedicated service with specialist medical teams available at all times.

Benefits to the patients

It is very distressing for patients diagnosed with blood cancer to have to travel to Mount Vernon or UCLH for the treatment they need. This can have a significant effect on the patient’s recovery time after being ill or receiving chemotherapy and may also stop family from being able to visit and support their relative as they are so far away.

The new unit will enable the hospital to support inpatient diagnosis of blood cancer immediately after imaging or radiology guided biopsies, which mean faster clinical assessments, better continuity of care and access to onsite specialists for any concerns and questions the patients may have. Staff will also be able to deliver slow infusions for the patients first cycle of chemotherapy and long duration IV infusions which will reduce irritation and complications.

This facility will also permit us to expand our research and clinical trial capacities in this field, which will save many more lives in years to come.
